The original snowflake was 16 feet long, weighed three-quarters of a ton, and was bedangled with 12,000 Baccarat crystals. The folks at UNICEF decided to take it up another notch and re-commissioned Ingo Maurer to make the snowflake that floats 80 feet above holiday crowds strolling along Fifth Avenue and 57th Street even more impressive. The new glitzy bit of bling boasts 16,000 Baccarat crystals and has grown a bit, now measuring 23 feet in diameter, 28 feet in height, and weighing in at a somewhat portly 3,300 pounds

The outdoor crystal chandelier is intended as a vehicle to raise funds and awareness to help UNICEF "brighten the world for children"
