Cirque du Soleil had its
beginnings in Club des Talons Hauts (the High Heels Club), a
Quebec-based group of street performers. Beginning with the Fete
Foraine de Baie-Saint-Paul in 1982, the troupe soon morphed into
the Cirque. The show's striking, dramatic mix of the circus arts
and street entertainment first hit New York City in 1988 and the
dazzling shows have entranced audiences since
Corteo Elation and
jubilation! Audience members are meant to be entranced from the
moment they enter the Grand Chapiteau, a dazzling white big
top, under which today's most stylishly produced circus acts in
the world perform. We like to make the comparison between Regis
Philbin's Millionaire and Gene Rayburn's Match Game:
What was familiar and entertaining becomes -- with modern twists
on the use of lighting, music and the addition of a bit of a story
line -- a high-concept theatrical event. Corteo, with it's
lyrical and playful musical style, is the celebration of a clown's
life with the passing of his funeral cortege. It might sound a
bit downbeat, though with bouncing beds, spinning chandeliers,
juggling, rhythmic gymnastics, exciting teeterboard routines,
the ever nail-biting tightwire -- plus much more -- the Chapiteau sizzles
with the audiences' anticipation and reaction. It's all performed
in the sophisticated, mesmerizing style for which Cirque du
Soleil is famous
