Fleet Week
This year six ships from
the US Navy, four from the US Coast Guard and one from our
good neighbor to the North will participate in
Fleet Week, New York's premier thank you to the men and women of our
armed forces. This New York City celebration
started in 1984 with a visit to the Intrepid
Sea-Air-Space Museum by battleship USS Iowa to commemorate the
40th anniversary of the Battle for Leyte Gulf. Intermittent at
first, Fleet Weeks has been a regular Memorial Day tradition since
1989. Hosted by the Museum, participating members engage in a wide
range of demonstrations and competitions, including the ever popular
tug-of-war, softball, jousting, search & rescue
demonstrations. A full range of entertainment is provided for
sailors and guests
Ships' members will also be marching
in many of the five boroughs Memorial
Day parades. So, if you can't get to the main events you can
always catch the folks in uniform in your neighborhood
This year's activities are a bit more wide-ranging, with ships
also berthed at the Stapleton Pier in Staten Island and Fleet Week
events and demonstrations held in all five boroughs. The Memorial Day service is 11:00A on the
28th.
Always poignant, the ceremony is more so when our young men and
women are in harm's way. Many Fleet Week participants
will take the opportunity to explore New York City. If you see them
wandering around, say 'Hi!' Give directions. Say 'Thanks!.' Most of
all enjoy!
