The Village Halloween Parade all
started as a neighborhood walk in 1973. Ralph Lee, his children and
their friends strolled into New York City history when they set out
on a night of traditional door-to-door Halloween merry making.
Twenty eight years later the parade includes 1,000 volunteers;
30,000 marchers; 32 bands; and an estimated 2 million spectators. It
is "the largest grass roots celebration of its kind in the
country"
The giant, animated puppets at the
heart of the parade were the vision of Mr Lee, a mask maker and
puppeteer. The puppets, grown larger over the years, are carried and
animated by a corps of 1,000 volunteers. Last year's parade was
devoted to the healing, rebuilding and rebirth of New York. This
year the parade's theme is one joyous word: PLAY
Taking cues from carnival krewes in
New Orleans and Brazil, many Village residents organized themselves
into marching groups. Groups select themes early in the year and
spend much time constructing lavish costumes and choreographing
routines. The results are vibrant, colorful and often outrageous.
The keywords associated with the Village Halloween Parade are participatory
and inclusive. All you need to march is a costume. Don't want
to march? Wear a costume anyway. Or at least a funny hat, a touch of
makeup or a fake nose
