Ringling Brothers and Barnum
& Bailey Circus It was way back in 1872 that Phineas T
Barnum first used the phrase "the greatest show on
earth" to describe his entertainment enterprise playing in
the New York Hippodrome, soon to be known as the original Madison
Square Garden. P T Barnum already had a long history as a New York
City showman, starting with his American Museum -- mostly of
nature's oddities and curiosities -- across from City Hall. The
history continued when, after an 1881 merger, Barnum &
Bailey's Circus continued performances at the old Garden. Then, on
March 29, 1919, the first performance of the newly combined
Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus® was held in New
York City's second Madison Square Garden, on the same site of the
first. All told, the ringmaster's cry of "Ladies and
gentlemen, children of all ages," introduced expectant chills
of excitement in four Madison Square Gardens, from Madison Square
to 8th Avenue and 50th Street to today's location above Penn
Station
Ladies and gentlemen, children
of all ages still resounds in the new Garden as Ringling Bros
and Barnum & Bailey® presents Barnum's FUNundrum. The
folks at Ringling call it "a celebration of P T Barnum so big,
it is an event 200 years in the making!"
Hosted by Ringmaster Jonathan Lee
Iverson, the show features three rings-full of stars. You really
can't be sure what animals ex-pro rodeo guy Andre McClain is
going to show up besides his horse, but you know they'll be
exciting. Daniel Raffo usually brings 10 Siberian, Sumutran and
Bengal tigers along and fascinates audiences as he puts them
through their paces
What would a
circus be without such daredevil favorites such as the Globe of
Steel? Watch in awe as the Torres Family reach speeds of up to
65 miles per hour inside that very cramped space. If you like
high-wire acts you'll be thrilled as you watch the members of
the Makarov Troupe near the roof of the Garden. Father Sergey,
along with daughters Karina and Elina, and sons-in-law Sergey
and Mikhail dazzle with their tricks while actually keeping
their balance. Afterwards Karina and Elina further push the
limits on a lyra (the oval or trapeze shaped equipment dangling
from a line. Don't try this at home!
We all know about the "daring
young men on the flying trapeze." What happens when the trapeze
turns into a double decker version? Find out when The Flying
Caceres take to the air high overhead. We've talked about
motorcycles, high-wire and lyra acts. What say we put them all
together. Impossible? Tell that to Alex Petrov as he rides a
bike across a wire with Gleice de Souza Gillet suspended
beneath. Can you say "Breathtaking"?
Elephants? Check. Clowns? Check
And more...
Ninety minutes before the show
you can go behind the scenes for the Animal Open House to
get up close and personal with your favorite circus beasts. Be
sure to bring your camera along. Oh, and it's free
And more...
Just how up-close and
personal can you get with the circus stars? Find out by starting your circus
adventure early by arriving one hour before performance to take
part in Ringling's All-Access Pre-Show. You don't watch from your
seat -- you're on the circus floor --
with the show's famous elephants, clowns and other performers. And the
great thing is that it's at no extra charge -- it's
already included in the price of the ticket!
