NYC Street Fairs, Festivals & Feasts
Tips and Hints
Street fair, festival, feast and carnival schedules are subject to change or cancellation without notice. Always have alternate plans in case of inclement weather or schedule changes. Last updated May 1, 2007
New York City street fairs
are a great way to spend a weekend day. Stroll along and discover
bargains of every description: antiques and collectibles, outlet
goods, everything- for- a- buck stalls, vintage magazines and
photos, handmade paper, cosmetics, herbs and spices, face painting
and fun. Enjoy the street performers with their offerings of South
American music, blues guitar, magic and more. Don't forget the
food stands, offering a great selection of New York City street
food and ethnic eats at the right prices
Just in Case Street fairs
are subject to inclement weather, city permits and, in some cases,
the whims of the organizers. Always have a fallback plan, even if
its just walking along the same street and window shopping. We've
only listed each event once so, especially for the weekends, check
prior weekday listings for events that continue through the
weekend
Buying Right Don't buy
anything you'll regret tomorrow. Street fairs are great places to
stock up on commodity items such as socks, underwear, shampoo,
toothpaste and the like. Some of the goods are first rate, some
are you-get-what-you-pay-for. All the prices look good amidst the
hustle and bustle bazaar-like atmosphere, but don't be surprised
if that can of deodorant is actually cheaper at the Duane Reade
drugstore just down the street. Be very careful if you make a
major purchase. Always insist on seeing the vendors licenses and
business card. Make a quick call to check the phone number before
paying and consider paying with a credit card that offers purchase
protection
Be Careful Wherever you find
crowds in NYC you find pickpockets. Do all the things you should
to protect yourself: Don't keep your money and wallet in a back
pocket; don't carry your purse in a backpack, you can't see who's
fiddling with the zipper behind you; only carry items you can
afford to lose in your handbag. Just use plain common sense and
enjoy the day
