City Center was originally
designed as the New York home of the Ancient Order of the Nobles
of the Mystic Shrine, which accounts for the lavish Moorish-style
decoration on the building's facade and in the auditorium. The
Order, apparently, couldn't keep their books in order and, after a
period of City ownership, evolved into one of the City's
foremost cultural institutions, featuring a full menu of
world-class music and dance performances
City Center annually is host to
seasons of Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theater, American
Ballet Theater, Dance
Theater of Harlem, Paul Taylor Dance Company and the hugely
popular City Center Encores! series of Broadway musicals in
concert
