A National Historic Landmark, the
Eldridge Street Synagogue was built in 1887 to serve the influx of
Eastern European Jews. The elegant Moorish structure, with its
70-foot ceiling, magnificent stained glass windows, Victorian
fixtures and hand-stenciled walls became the heart of Lower East
Side Jewish life and still retains the presence of the immigrants
who came to the neighborhood seeking a fresh start
The Synagogue's many programs
throughout the year explore it's experience within the contexts of
art, history, architecture and urban life and are meaningful for
anyone with interests in New York City's past, in Jewish culture,
or with a connection to Eldridge Street and the Lower East Side
