The Governor's Room at City Hall
served as the office of the governor when he was down in the City
from Albany. It was restored in 1907 and includes two wooden
settees and a writing table used by George Washington. The
Governor's Room permanent collection includes portraits of all NYC
mayors and NYS governors from the time of the Revolution, many
heroes of the War of 1812 and other luminaries to include
Christopher Columbus and the Marquis de Lafayette
The collection boasts 12 portraits
by John Trumbull, among them the first two commissioned for the
collection, George Washington and George Clinton.
Other artists represented include John Wesley Jarvis, Thomas
Sully, Samuel Waldo, Samuel FB Morse, George Catlin and Rembrandt
Peale. Not all works are always on display, but at any given time
the displayed pieces represent an impressive 200-year survey of
American portraiture
