minimum Jazz at Lincoln Center,
under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, produces a wide range of
productions: concerts, tours, radio and television events,
educational programs including the annual Essentially Ellington
high-school jazz band competition, and much more. Some critics
have accused Marsalis of over-emphasizing 'classic' jazz sounds at
the expense of modern, more experimental music. This is akin to
the New York Philharmonic taking the rap for ignoring hip-hop. The
works the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and guest performers
present are classic; to us they are meant to showcase the
heyday of jazz and the many styles, flavors and influences that
are the roots of the modern movement. Jazz at Lincoln Center also
presents newly-commissioned works by major composers and
collaborations with symphony orchestras worldwide
In the Fall 2004 the new Frederick P
Rose Hall, a $115 million, 100,000 square-foot space that, in the
words of Marsalis is "dedicated to the feeling of
swing," became the new home of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The facility, located in AOL Time Warner's new world headquarters,
includes rehearsal studios, classrooms, screening rooms,
broadcast facilities, a state of the art full-scale production
space, a large concert theater and a smaller, club-like performance space
