The New York City Ballet has
its roots in depression-era dreams of impresarios Lincoln
Kirstein, Serge Diaghilev and choreographer George Balanchine.
Initial efforts were pretty much unsuccessful, encompassed by
artistic and business turmoil and ultimately interrupted by World
War II. The Company found its success post-war at City Center with
Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, the two most influential
choreographers of the twentieth century. The New
York State Theater at Lincoln Center was built expressly for
ballet and the Company gave the inaugural performance in the
spring of 1964
