Says The folks at the Carlton say that this is "New
York's newest grand old hotel." And they just might be right.
Still another of the older NYC hotels that has undergone a complete renovation, the
Carlton's beaux-arts facade (think wedding cake icing done in terra
cotta) is a stunning throwback to the grand New York of old. A
couple of years ago the Carlton featured pretty standard
accommodations at a bit of a stiff price and we said "the
Carlton is offering nothing distinctive by way of style or
attitude." Well, that's changed. Recent renovations have made
the guest rooms very distinctive and very comfortable. Soothingly
warm earth tones (Why is everyone using earth tones?) are accented
by mahogany furniture and luxury fabrics (Frette and Scalamandre).
As almost always in NYC the rooms aren't quite as roomy as you'd
like, though we think they'd make a comfy little oasis after a day
or night on the
town. If you happen to get a good rate the north Gramercy location
is convenient to a wide area: from Washington Square to Central Park
and across town to Macy's and the Javits Convention Center. The
Carlton New York is still a-building, with an atrium-style
three-story lobby, health club, restaurant and bar in an addition
slated to be complete late 2002 or early 2003
