The Maritime Hotel opened in July, 2003, but it's distinctive architectural touches have long been the subject of conversation of New Yorker's not in the know. "What the heck is that?" first time sighters ask when they see the porthole studded building. Well, they're portholes. Fully-functioning, opening and closing portholes in what had been the headquarters of the maritime workers' union. Drastically renovated, remodeled, molded and redesigned, the Maritime now offers the only full-service hotel in the Chelsea area. And it is distinctly upscale service, with rates for a standard room starting at about $199 per night. The hotel offers not one, but two restaurants, Italian and Japanese; luxury bed and bath linens; upscale bathroom amenities; and service, service, service.
