Says This is a "Great find!" One of the
Phoenixes rising from the ashes of older New York City hotels, the
newly-renovated, completely redesigned Avalon welcomes visitors with
an impressive marble-columned, wood-accented lobby. The warm,
helpful staff invites you to enjoy afternoon tea in the gracious
library just off the lobby. Rooms and suites are impeccably
furnished and maintained, featuring comfortable and traditional
continental furnishings which we think are a nice break from the
"me-too art-deco earth-tone palettes" that hotel designers
have fallen in love with over the past few years. The Avalon is
simply a dang nice hotel and we can't say too much about it. The
Avalon is a small hotel, only 20 rooms and 80 suites, so service is
very personal. Everybody on the staff we spoke with had that very
polished, professional manner with blends courtesy with warmth and
friendliness. The room decor is executed so well that they are very
functional for a businessperson but charming enough for a romantic
weekend on the town. There's a nice touch of luxury in the marble
baths, deluxe Irish bed linens and the umbrella sitting by the door.
On
the Southern edge of Murray Hill, the neighborhood has not yet
reached full stride in its comeback, but things are a-buildin' on
each block. The Avalon is a stone's throw from the Empire State
Building, a short cab ride across town to the Javits Convention
Center, and a nice stroll down 5th Avenue to the Flatiron District,
Gramercy Park and Chelsea. The Theater District and Midtown
attractions start about 14 blocks North
Note We've seen some great rates at the Avalon this year,
like a Junior Suite for $189.95 double occupancy. At about 450
square feet that's larger than most New Yorker's apartments -- no
exaggeration!
Rates $219.95 to $549.95
