Says Formerly a Doral property, the Kimpton chain took
this over and turned it into the 70 park avenue hotel (Yeah, to be
different it's all lower case.), the chain's first foray into New
York City. As the Doral it was one of the more appealing hotels in
Manhattan, as 70 park it might turn out to be more so. The Kimpton
folks put some umpty-ump million dollars into the total renovation
of the property, and it shows. From the moment you walk in and are
faced with the huge fireplace you know you are in for a very special
treat. The hallmark of designer Jeffrey Bilhuber turns out to be a
very contemporary feel with a heck of a lot of traditional comfort.
There's no shock, no edgy look, nothing that you can admire with
your mind but want to leave as soon as possible. The design and
decoration throughout the public spaces and guest rooms makes you
want to stay. I was a bit disappointed at first when I saw the
"earth-toned" palette in play, one that has been quite overdone in
recent years; however, in Mr Bilhuber's hands the results are quite
different, with straight-lined wood tables and accent pieces
contrasting with comfortable upholstered sofas and chairs. This is a
place I'd like to call home on a visit to NYC
The hotel is quite suitable for
either the upscale business or pleasure traveler, providing services
and amenities appealing and important to both. The folks on the
staff I got to speak with were cordial, pleasant, friendly, helpful
-- pick an adjective, they were nice
70 park avenue hotel is located in one of
Manhattan's most appealing neighborhoods, Murray Hill. This quiet,
residential area is a nice respite after a day or night on the town
and offers many dining and entertainment options. Choices range from
expense-account dining to neighborhood haunts, from inexpensive
Indian places along "Curry Hill" to the hot nightspots of
Park Avenue South. Murray Hill is convenient to much of Midtown;
short strolls take you the Morgan Library, Herald Square shopping,
the Empire State Building and the United Nations. A long stroll or
short cab ride puts you in the middle of Rockefeller Center and 5th
Avenue shopping or the heart of the Theater District
