Says New York City's Hotel 31 is a small,
tourist-class hotel located on the southern edge of Manhattan's
quiet Murray Hill neighborhood. The hotel offers surprisingly nice
rooms for the price; their aren't many amenities, but then again,
you aren't paying for them. The rooms are fresh and clean -- the
entire hotel has been renovated and redecorated. The designer
definitely got away from the ever popular "earth-tone
palette" and went with somewhat bright colors. In most rooms
the walls behind the bed match the pattern of the bedspread; we'd
like to use the word "tasteful" but in some cases the
effect is kind of garish. The couple of people on the hotel's staff
we spoke with were pleasant, friendly and very helpful. One of the
best things about Hotel 31 is its location. We would consider it to
be within walking distance of a large swath of Manhattan, from Union
Square to the south, through the Flatiron District, past the inexpensive
Indian restaurants of Curry Hill along Lexington Avenue, up to Grand
Central Terminal and beyond. Younger legs would probably range from
Greenwich Village to Central Park. It's especially convenient to the
Empire State Building and Herald Square shopping. The immediate
neighborhood offers a wide range of neighborhood eateries, taverns,
pubs and the glitzy joints along Park Avenue South
