Says The New Yorker is one of the grand NYC hotels from the
heyday of Art-Deco. It has recently been completely renovated and
restored. This is a large hotel, about 1,000 rooms, and you feel
that as you enter the expansive two-story lobby with its glittering
chandeliers. Though not as Deco-detailed as other hotels built in
the same period, say the Edison
Hotel, the last refurbishment has really spiffed the place up.
The standard New Yorker rooms are comfortably furnished in
hotel-modern with no surprises and few amenities, but offer great
value for the tourist buck. And, for a Manhattan hotel, they have a
bit of room. The Tower Suites are among the most spacious in
town and feature a more than ample seating area, large dining area,
wet bar and separate bedroom. We actually prefer the Plaza
Suites; though a bit smaller, they are much cozier and
decorated, at least to us, more in keeping with the hotel's past.
The hotel offers many on-site services and with its 8th Avenue &
34th Street location anything else
you can possibly want or need is literally just steps away. Madison
Square Garden and Penn Station are a block away on 33rd Street. For
Macy's and other Herald Square shopping walk one block east to 7th
Avenue; the Empire State Building is just two blocks beyond, on 5th
Avenue. Why most convention goers stay in out-of-the-way hotels that
are a hassle to get to when the New Yorker is a three-block stroll
to the Jacob Javits Convention Center we'll never quite understand
