What Susie says about the Algonquin, a New York City hotelSusie Says  So, you're a literate history junkie. Who do you want to see? Robert Benchley? George S Kaufman? Ring Lardner? Alexander Woollcott? Ah, how about James Thurber or Dorothy Parker? Well, they aren't around anymore, but that doesn't mean that the aura of the '20's Martini set doesn't still pervade the air of this historic hostelry. If you come to town for a long weekend of theater, a stay here will thrust you back a few years. The folks at the Algonquin Hotel did a lovely job when they renovated the place in 1998, keeping right in with the spirit of the old hostelry. They peeled back here, polished there, exposed period details all over. This is all wood, all marble, all comfortable sofas in sumptuous fabrics. Have a pre-theater Photo of Algonquin New York City hotel guest roomdrink in the Blue Bar then stroll up Broadway to see a show. Afterwards, meander back and enjoy a late supper and some of the best NYC cabaret entertainment in the Oak Room

The Algonquin's rooms are very comfortably appointed in a charming '20s style that would be very familiar to members of the Round Table and, sorry to say, some of the furnishings might have been around at that time. A bit worn here, a bit threadbare there, though not enough, I think, to affect your overall stay. Everything is clean and comfy. The standard -- they call them "deluxe" -- rooms are, as most NYC hotel rooms from this era, not overly spacious; "cozy" is an apt description. And, as we often stress, you're not supposed to be hanging out in your room, this is New York, get out and enjoy it

What sets the Algonquin apart from many hotels in the same price range is its overall level of service. Whether you walk through the door to find the bar or cabaret, enjoy a cup of coffee in the lobby, or stop in to ask one of the much too often heard questions (Where do I find the cat?), the staff is always professional, courteous and friendly. This is not a "big box" chain hotel where you pay the basically the same rates for efficient, perfunctory service. It's smaller and delivers service on a much more personal level

The Algonquin is as much a tourist attraction as it is a hotel, so expect throngs of people in the public areas. Besides being a premier destination near the Theater District and Times Square, the Algonquin is the perfect jumping off spot for doing all of the sights and attractions in Midtown and is very near subway and bus connections to all other parts of the City

And be sure to say "Hi" to Matilda the cat
