Says I'm not going to be abashed and hold anything back
here, the Edison is one of my favorite budget hotels in New York
City. The rooms of this 1931 Theater District hotel are
simply decorated, clean and tastefully done, a great place to stay in the City,
especially if you get a good rate, which you often can. The Edison was a grand hotel in
its heyday and the recently restored art deco lobby will knock your
socks off, as much over the top as two other New York City buildings
that went up around the same time, Radio City Music Hall and the
Chrysler Building
The devil is in the details and the folks at the
Edison get most of them right: the staff is friendly, rooms are
spacious enough considering this is Manhattan and, though there's
not a great number of amenities, they provide the ones you really
need. The on-premises cafe is a great surprise; with reasonably
priced meals there's no longer a reason to go out in search of a
good breakfast before starting your day and it's a great place for
lunch if you take a break from sightseeing. For an evening or
after-theater cocktail the Rum Bar is the place to go for great
drinks and a convivial New York saloon atmosphere
A couple of hints. First, this is an
older building with Con Edison supplied steam heat (Yep, that's the
stuff you see drifting through the streets in all those film-noir
movies). As such rooms can get a bit, hmmm, warm during the heating
season. This is simply a fact of Manhattan life. Just do what other
folks in the city do and throw open the windows to get some fresh
air. Second, to keep some of the street noise down try to get a room
on a high floor
The location is great for Broadway.
Hey! It is Broadway. The Barrymore, Biltmore, and Brooks
Atkinson Theaters are on the same block. You can't get much closer
to the Theater District without wearing greasepaint. And consider
Times Square to be your own private theme park. The great restaurants and nightspots
along Restaurant Row are only a block
away and the Edison is convenient to just about everything else you
would want to see or do in Midtown Manhattan and a quick subway or
bus ride to everything else the city has to offer.
A bit of trivia Yankee Stadium is a straight shot up the
former West Side -- now Joe Dimagio -- Highway; this is where the
Yankee Clipper lived during many of the seasons he roamed center
field for the Bronx Bombers
