Says The Milford Plaza's claim to fame? Well, besides
billing itself as the "Lullaby of Broadway," I can sum it
up in three little words: Location, location, location. And I can
say that at least 13 times as the Milford is just down the street
from the Imperial, Music Box, Booth, Plymouth, Royale, John Golden,
Shubert, Broadhurst, Majestic, Helen Hayes, Marquis, and St James
theaters. More? The Martin Beck is just across 8th Avenue and all
other Broadway theaters are just moments away on foot. Oh, and the
lights and excitement of Times Square are just down the street
This is a
large hotel that doesn't charge outrageous rates. Just keep in mind
that it is not a luxury property -- you get what you pay for. If you
don't expect too much from the Milford you'll have a great stay. The
service can be somewhat impersonal at times, it can sometimes be
slow. At other times it can be fast, efficient, courteous and
friendly. (I have an idea that it might depend on how long the
person you're dealing with was stuck on the subway on the way to
work. No excuse, just a fact of life.)
Rooms
at the Milford are on the
small side -- two people might have trouble maneuvering in the
smaller rooms -- but always fresh and clean. A few are getting a bit
time worn but I noticed during a quick visit to a friend from out of
town in February 2004 that new carpets are being laid and some
general freshening up is taking place. There really isn't much to
distinguish the rooms, it's all easy care hotel modern furnishings
in non-offensive colors. The hallways can be a bit dim and
intimidating but the hotel itself is very safe and secure, you
need a room key to get on an elevator
The hotel doesn't offer a lot in
fancy services but just about anything a couple in town to see the
sites would need. The Celebrity deli, while not the best in town,
isn't too bad a place for breakfast or to grab a quick sandwich for
lunch. There's the usual guest services desk where you can book
tickets to a show. Kind of unnecessary since you're just down the
street from a slew of Broadway box offices and the half-priced TKTS
booth is a very short walk away in Duffy Square. If there is
anything you need not offered at the hotel there are many, many
shops and stores nearby
And remember, this is New York!
You're supposed
to be out and about and enjoying all the fun and excitement the City
has to offer. The Milford is a popular spot for travelers, always
hustling and bustling, full of life. As convenient as it is for
Broadway, the hotel is within walking distance of all other Midtown
attractions you might like to enjoy. Restaurant Row with its great
food and cabarets are a short five-minute stroll away and it's close to bus and subway stops to take you anywhere
else in NYC you care to go
Bottom line? Keeping in mind that it
isn't the Four Seasons, all in all the Milford Plaza is a good bet for the Broadway bound
on a budget
