Says The Skyline is a bit out of the way from the main
Midtown tourist area, but that's what makes it one of the better
buys in New York City. After years of trying the neighborhood is
starting to come out of the doldrums and offers a pastiche of NYC
living -- apartments above the storefront bodegas on 10th Avenue and
luxury high-rises in Worldwide Plaza on 9th Avenue
This is a good,
tourist class hotel, kind of like one of the larger motels in normal
parts of the country. Most rooms are quite spacious for New York and
some have been recently renovated (be sure to ask for these), For decor think fresh,
clean motel-style furnishings. One of the real-life NYC problems you
might run into is an overabundance of steam heat, just ask them how
to open the windows a bit, it's what many of us have to do during
the heating season
The best feature is one of the rarest
in New York: a swimming pool. Yep, you don't find these too often
and the Skyline's is a nice one. It's located on the top floor and,
though not really high up, it has some great Manhattan views. Worth
it to go up and take a look even if you don't plan to take a dip
The Skyline is particularly
convenient to the Intrepid
Sea-Air-Space Museum and the passenger ship terminal where,
you'll either be hopping on a boat to Bermuda or attending one of
the many trade shows or art and antique exhibitions held there. The
hotel's 10th Avenue location is two long city blocks
from the start of the Theater District at 8th Avenue, figure about a
ten-minute walk. But on the way there you can stop at one of the
many neighborhood eateries along newly vibrant 9th Avenue and stop
in a different joint for a nightcap on the way back
