Susie
Says The Hotel Sofitel is fast becoming one of New York's
favorite places to stay, and I can see why. When even I walk in, a
person who just wants to poke her nose around ("Trying to find
a place for my sister and her family to stay") I'm treated
grandly. The Sofitel prides itself in its European service and the
staff here delivers. Very well-trained and professional, they are
all very friendly, courteous and helpful. This is one of the few new
hotels to be built in the past few years and they picked a great
location along Club Row, rubbing shoulders with the Ivy League club
buildings and older classics such as the Algonquin
and Iroquois. It's a great spot, not too
far from Times Square and the Theater District but far enough to be
out of the hub-bub and nearby just about any transportation option
you need
Rooms
at the Sofitel offer just a bit more space than usual for a New York
hotel, not much, but a bit more. All rooms are very nicely done in a
sort of classic, comfortable French style (make that very
comfortable, it's what you're paying for). Baths are marble and,
again, offer a bit more space than normal; many have separate bath
tubs and shower stalls. All come with added touches such as a makeup
mirror, telephone, scale (shudder), and upscale bath accessories. If
you can go the extra bucks you might want to opt for one of the
executive rooms. These are very spacious, have a few extra dramatic
touches and offer great Manhattan views. Ask for a room with a view
of the Chrysler Building
The Hotel Sofitel is fairly new and
as such doesn't suffer from the problems of some older buildings.
The heating and air conditioning is not as temperamental and, most
unusual in NYC, not much outside street noise makes it into the
rooms. It's almost quiet
Besides the hotel's restaurant and
bar there are many nearby eateries and drinking establishments.
Times Square and Broadway theaters a a few short blocks away. For
the traveler with a purpose all of the Midtown business district
starts as you walk out the door
Bottom line? Forget the Four Seasons
and for a change try this one on for size
