The Gorham, one of the nicer Euro-style
hotels that led the boutique wave in the 90s is gone, replaced by
the new Blakely Hotel. This time around, owners Richard Born and Ira
Drukier have decided to go traditional, putting a sense of comfort
ahead of high style. The lobby has a distinctive British "club
feel," with plenty of rich walnut and cherry wood about, plus richly
upholstered club chairs to dispel any doubt as to the ambiance
designer George Portero was trying to attain. The clubby feeling is
extended to the guest rooms, though their "cozy" size demanded a bit
of a lighter hand in carrying through the theme. All guest rooms
feature kitchenettes, marble baths, the requisite upscale amenities
and a lot of comfy down
The Blakely's W 55th Street location
is perfect for the leisure traveler wanting to take in Midtown
attractions or maybe a Broadway show. It's especially convenient to
the Museum of Modern Art, Carnegie Hall, Central Park and, just
across the street, City Center (and of course, 5th Avenue shopping)
