Says Trying to find New York's famous Barbizon Hotel? Well, you
found it. Some folks fancied it up a bit and now they call it the
Melrose. Can't imagine why they changed the name (and the address
from 1 Barbizon Plaza), especially since
they're still playing on the Barbizon's fame, as in: "this
historic hotel has catered to the likes of Grace Kelly, Joan
Crawford, Liza Minelli and Candace Bergen." We took a quick walk through the hotel's public areas after
the name change and didn't notice that much different (after all,
the Barbizon had only been restored and remodeled a few years ago).
The marbled lobby is still very impressive, and still sports the
Art-Deco touches that were the Barbizon's hallmark. We haven't yet
had a chance to check any of the newly restyled rooms, but most were
just a bit larger and lighter than other
NYC hotels from this era. The folks at the Melrose describe the
guest rooms as "a stunning architectural arrangement of light
and space...designed in beautiful soft pastel and earth tones,
giving the sense of comfort, warmth, and relaxation." The photo
appears to confirm this. The staff people I spoke with were all
friendly, courteous and very professional and seemed to be the type
to make for a pleasant stay. The Melrose is located in the Lenox
Hill neighborhood of Manhattan's Upper East Side and is perfect for
5th Avenue and Madison Avenue shopping sprees and just as convenient
for doing Museum Mile, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. And, of
course, you have Central Park to use as your backyard. There are a
lot of great places to eat in the area, though many are pricey and
some a bit stuffy. More down-to-earth neighborhood places can be
found a short walk away along 1st, 2nd and 3rd Avenues, as well as a
lively nighttime pub scene
