The Pierre Hotel is a classic New
York hotel. Opened in 1930 and is set within one of the City's most
luxurious co-op buildings on prestigious 5th Avenue overlooking
Central Park. Everything about the Pierre exudes old money, as it
should, since that's the folks for whom it was built. This is an
extremely expensive hotel, once owned by J Paul Getty who, in 1938
converted many of the suites into apartments for himself and
friends. When you dine in the hotel's restaurant in which August
Escoffier once cooked -- and that still delivers impeccably prepared
meals -- you realize that you are in what has been one of the best
hotels in the world for many years
There really isn't much that can be
said about a hotel such as the Pierre. When you get up into this
category everything is impeccable. From the Beaux Arts architecture
reminiscent of a French chateau, to the wood-paneled and sedately
designed public areas, to the individually styled and perfectly
furnished rooms and suites, to the careful and pleasant attention
given to everybody who walks through its doors, the Pierre hotel is
just about perfect
(But that's not to say it's stuffy.
Back in -- well, I won't say when -- my high school had our senior
prom at the Pierre, and I'm sure we came close to blowing that great
copper mansard roof off the place!)
The Pierre was part of the Four
Seasons Group until July 2005, when the operating lease was taken
over by Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces, a major player in the
ultra-luxury resort and hotel business with properties ranging from
London to Malaysia. The new owners are expected to plunk in a few
tens of millions of dollars to spiff up this grand old hotel
