Says The folks at New York City's Hotel Belleclaire call it
'Norwegian Art-Deco,' we're not too sure what the heck that means
but we like it a lot. We'd throw all the deco part out and just call
it sleekly modern and very functional. We also like the use of color;
in the past few years it seems like the designers for every
remodeled and renovated New York City hotel decided to use a 'warm,
earth-tone palette.' The folks who did the Belleclaire apparently
think that some color isn't such a bad thing, we must say that we
agree. One thing that helped them is that rooms at the Belleclaire
are just a tad bit larger than those found in other older NYC hotels
-- the designers didn't have to fight as much to make the rooms seem
light and airy. The Belleclaire is a tourist-class hotel and as such
does not provide the range of services and amenities found in a
Hilton or Hyatt; but the ones provided are those that you will use
and appreciate, just as you will appreciate the hotel's
Upper West Side location. As we recently wrote to someone asking
about the neighborhood: "It's great to stroll along Broadway or
Columbus or Amsterdam Avenues and window shop or choose a good place
to eat -- and there are a lot of places to eat, from great
holes-in-the-walls to some of the best upscale dining in town.
Eclectic is the word we most often use to describe the neighborhood:
the yuppies that gentrified it in the 80s alongside the folks left
over from the 50s and 60s with some newer yuppies just moving in.
Many folks work downtown in the Financial District, many are writers
and musicians or involved in theater and the arts. It's a great
place. Transportation down to Midtown is a snap by bus, subway or
cab. Lincoln Center is a stroll away, the Museum of Natural History
just down the street. And you might consider Central Park your NYC
backyard, just as we all do." That just about sums it up except
to say that the staff we spoke with at the Belleclaire were all
super. Can't think of anything to ask for
