What Susie says about the Wales, a New York City hotel Susie Says 'Ahhhhh!' Lots of woodwork, very well maintained, in the heart of the Upper East Side's Museum Mile in the Carnegie Hill Historic District. Understated New York elegance sets the tone throughout the hotel. Comfortably-furnished rooms are quite small -- Susie says she can sit on the edge of the bed and change channels on the TV with her nose -- but she doesn't mind, its too comfortable to care. Our friend Lorraine left New York for the warmer climes of Miami a couple of years ago but insists on coming back, and back, and back. Lorraine has stayed at quite a few hotels on her return trips and is something of an expert on New York City lodging. Lorraine was very impressed with and keeps going back to the Wales. She especially liked the second-floor lounge, a quiet, spacious area where Continental breakfast ("Very good") and afternoon tea ("Charming") are served and you can spread out with your newspaper. The staff is especially attentive and service is courteous and friendly. One of the first of the new wave of Manhattan's boutique hotels a few Photo of Wales New York City hotel guest suiteyears back, the Wales offers a complimentary drink upon arrival, 24-hour complimentary coffee service, luxurious bathrobes and, in a new twist  -- "all suites are beautifully decorated with your choice of bedding." I have to get back there to see exactly what that means. In the meantime, the Carnegie Hill area is 'veddy' refined and the Wales is a great place from which to base excursions along Manhattan's Museum Mile or Madison Avenue boutique shopping. A stroll across Central Park (consider it kind of a big back yard during your stay), takes you to the Upper West Side and American Museum of Natural History. Nearby subway will whisk you to Midtown in moments
