Theater was formed in 1958. It's mission: "Promoting the
uniqueness of black cultural expression and the preservation and
enrichment of the American modern dance heritage." Over the
next 40+ years the company has become one of the country's
foremost cultural ambassadors, constantly on tour to distant
points around the globe. Many of Alvin Ailey's revolutionary
dances, such as Revelations and Pas de Duke, have
become modern classics, part of the American dance vernacular.
After Ailey passed away in 1989, Judith Jamison, an acclaimed
Ailey dancer for 15 years, took over the artistic reigns and
continues of choreographer as teacher. The Company's new
home, the Joan Weill Center for Dance, at 55th Street and 9th
Avenue, was dedicated in March 2005
