People's Symphony Concerts
was founded by Franz X Arens, a young German conductor, in 1900,
as a way to bring affordable, enjoyable music to his immigrant
neighbors on the Lower East Side. In the early years concerts were
full orchestral events held at the nearby Great Hall at Cooper
Union. In later years the main venue moved to Washington Irving
High School with some performances at Town Hall, and presentations
tailored more towards solo artists and chamber recitals
More than 100 years later the
People's Symphony Concerts presents three series of concerts each
year that feature some of the artists most popular with New York
City audiences, including the Julliard String Quartet, Garrick
Ohlsson, Guarneri String Quartet, Beaux Arts Trio, Musicians from
Marlboro, eighth blackbird and Trio Solisti -- all at very, very
affordable prices
