Highlights

In October 2002 the American Craft
Museum became the Museum of Arts and Design. Though not abandoning
"craftsmanship" the museum's new name "expresses the
institution's mission as a contemporary museum dedicated to
celebrating materials and the processes of transforming them into
expressive objects." The institution continues to emphasize
American crafts of the 20th century in clay, metal, fiber, wood and
glass. Pieces made to be used--teapots, chairs, quilts, bowls,
jugs--share space alongside those simply admired for the
craftsmanship. The museum offers a full range of lectures,
demonstrations and workshop activities
The Museum is currently planning a
move to its new home at 2 Columbus Circle, the somewhat
controversial "lollipop" building built in 1964 to house Huntington
Hartford's Gallery of Modern Art. Minimally used since, the building
has been the object of a tug of war between preservationists and
developers. We'll see how it all plays out
