Highlights

The Museum of Modern Art was founded
in 1929 by three grande dames of New York City society, Miss
Lillie P Bliss, Mrs John D Rockefeller Jr and Mrs Cornelius J Sullivan. Starting with a donated collection of eight prints and one
drawing the Museum's permanent collection has grown to almost
200,000 pieces representing all media
The constant expansion kept MoMA on
the move during its early days, finally settling into its current
location in 1939. Those keen of eye and geography will notice that
this is Rockefeller country. The Museum has
reworked, reinvented and rebuilt itself numerous times since. The most
recent version of its facilities was unveiled in November 2004.
(I have to admit that the $20 entrance fee has put me off and I
can't speak to the new look or layout. I don't
plan to visit until there's a show I really, really want to see,
probably the Dada exhibit in September 2006)
The Museum was the first to organize
works of modern media and technologies into separate curatorial
departments. Joining the traditional disciplines Painting and
Sculpture; Drawings; Prints and Illustrated Books, were three new
fields, Architecture and Design; Film and Media; and
Photography
MoMA presents its permanent
collection in six major exhibition spaces and mounts many special
exhibitions throughout the year. It provides a wide -- make that an
enormous -- variety of family and kids programs, educational
programs, outreach programs, seminars, lectures and whatever else a
museum can possibly offer
The Museum is affiliated with the
PS 1 Contemporary Art Center in Long
Island City
