Highlights

The Asia Society was founded in 1956
by John D Rockefeller III to further the understanding of Asian arts
and history. The basis of the Society's permanent collection is that
of Mr Rockefeller and his wife, started during a 1951 visit to
Japan. Reflecting the Rockefeller's eye for quality, the collection
is composed of pieces from all major Asian areas and cultures and
include pieces from a variety of media and disciplines. Ceramic
pieces and manuscripts are particularly exquisite. The Society
currently mounts about four major exhibitions per year, thematically
focusing on a country, culture or medium. The exhibitions are often
major in scope and are among the best mounted museum shows in the
country. The Society's bookstore has one of the largest selections
of books relating to Asia
