Highlights

The last major work by architect
Frank Lloyd Wright, the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum's building is
itself a masterpiece and the youngest building ever to be designated
a New York City landmark. The Museum's holdings were initially based
on Solomon Guggenheim's collection of non-objective modern art,
amassed under the influence of Baroness Hilla Rebay von Ehrenwiesen,
who had introduced Guggenheim to such artists as Fernand Leger, Marc
Chagall and Vasily Kandinsky in the late '20s. The Solomon R
Guggenheim Collection of Non-Objective Painting was first installed
in space rented on E 54th Street
In 1959, long after Guggenheim's
death, the collection moved to it's current location. It was also
after Guggenheim's death that the breadth of the collection was
expanded to include such artists as Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne,
Paul Klee, Robert Mangold, Richard Serra and others, both by
purchase and by donation
