Newsletter 10 - June 1 2000
We're sorry to say that after June 2000,
because of changes in our service provider's operations and a host
of other circumstances, we were forced to discontinue publication of
what -- we thought -- was a information packed digest. We hope to be
able to resume sometime in the future

NYC Water only $101.80 per Gallon
Hot or cold, New York City water sells for as high as $101.80
per gallon! Huh?
A couple of weeks ago Susie hosted a reception
room for an out-of-town convention in one of the City's better known
hotels. She knows prices in hotels are always higher than in the
surrounding neighborhood, but was shocked at the hotel catering
prices charged for coffee, tea and HOT WATER!
At 9:00A, the hotel served 1 gallon of coffee,
1/2 gallon of decaf and 1/2 gallon of hot water for tea. The charge?
$80 per gallon. The hotel served 1 gallon of iced tea in the
afternoon, again charging $80
Then, as they say in the business, it's
"Plus, plus." That's $80.00 plus a 19%
service charge ($15.20) and plus 8.25% sales tax ($6.60). At $101.80
per gallon, the 3 gallons of beverages cost the convention
producers $305.40!
On the same invoice were charges for 8-ounce
bottles of soft drinks and mineral water. Ironically, at $4.25 a
pop, that works out to $68 per gallon pre-plus-plus and $86.53
total ($68.00 + $12.92 service + $5.61 tax)
So, how much were the cookies? Two dozen assorted
cookies at $3 each. Pillsbury cookie dough goes for
around $1.29 and makes about 2 dozen. You figure it out
If you host an event in a New York City hotel
you have no choice but to pay the exorbitant catering prices.
However, if you are staying in a hotel you can save dramatically
just by eating your meals elsewhere. This same hotel's coffee shop
charges $11.95 for a Continental breakfast and $17.95
for an American-style buffet (eggs, ham, sausage, potatoes,
pancakes, etc). We've seen lines of 20 or 30 people waiting to pay
these prices while, within a block or two, neighborhood coffee shops
charge from $3 to $5 for a full breakfast. And, from the guys in the
street-corner coffee carts, you can get a large coffee and bagel
with a smear for $2.25
Bottom Line Take a morning walk and save
some big bucks
