Newsletter 12 - June 15, 2000
We're sorry to say that after June 2000,
because of changes in our service provider's operations and a host
of other circumstances, we were forced to discontinue publication of
what -- we thought -- was a information packed digest. We hope to be
able to resume sometime in the future

1. Not Much Time
There isn't that much time to write this week.
Convention and meeting work is keeping both of us busy and the
traffic on Jim's Deli doubled, generating many more e-mails that
must be answered. Plus, Jim just hasn't gotten any good ideas that
might be of interest to anyone else. Maybe he'll come up with a
tidbit or two for next week
Weather-wise it's been a lousy New York City
week. On very hot weekend with temperatures soaring into the 90s,
accompanied by very heavy, very humid air. Then a plunge into the
very wet, bone-chilling 40s and 50s. Not quite June in NYC. It's a
good thing the City offers a lot in the way of museums, theater and
other indoor attractions so tourists won't be too disappointed. And
seeing Central Park on an overcast day is still impressive, though
different than when the sun is shining
Spoke to a woman from the New York Botanical
Gardens on Tuesday. She said the roses were in full bloom; it should
be the same at the rose garden in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Last
summer's heat considerably damaged the area's rose crop. The area
had a good amount of rainfall this year and no overwhelming heat;
almost perfect rose conditions. So take a ride to Brooklyn or the
Bronx and smell the roses (first check for bees!)
2. Greenmarket Report
It's been in the works for awhile and they
finally opened a new Greenmarket in Turtle Bay. Wednesday was the
first day of operation at 46th Street and 2nd Avenue. There are only
about eight stands, but they offer a nice variety of the season's
produce. Salad and cooking greens were predominant, there was a good
selection of fresh herbs, some very nice turnips and beets and, best
of all for Susan, the first of the local broccoli and asparagus
The stand operators Jim spoke with seemed quite
pleased with the first day, especially since the opening wasn't
publicized in the neighborhood. They think it is going to be a
success
You can find a complete list of New York City
Greenmarkets, what's on the stands now and what's coming up at our
