Have New York Question?
Maybe our buddy Vinnie can help. He's an
all around New Yorker who knows everything there is about the City.
Well, maybe not everything, but he's the type of guy who knows the
people who know the answers
Help Needed! Does anybody know if
Brooklyn had a drive-in theater? I haven't been able to nail one
down, but I've found some tantalizing hints that there might have
been one, possibly in the Marine Park or Flatlands neighborhoods. If
you can say yes or no, please drop me a line at Brooklyn Drive-In
Be forewarned Sometimes the volume of
e-mail is just too heavy to respond to in a timely matter. If there
is something you absolutely, positively have to have right now
it might be best to try to find the information someplace else
Vinnie can't answer questions about:
-
Parking in New York It's best just
not to drive into the City. The New York City Department of
Transportation Parking
Facilities in New York information page has interactive and
downloadable maps of more than 1,900 municipal and private parking
garages and lots around the City
-
Non-specific
questions such as "What's there to do in New York?" If
Vinnie wanted to write a book, he would
-
Restaurants It's been taking up to
two hours per day to answer questions about where to eat and it's
taking much needed time away from developing our own restaurant
section. So, until we get that done, your best option is to use
one of the other services, such as Zagat's
or Restaurant.com
-
No subject or something like
"Hi" or "Yo!" These don't get opened, they're trashed upon
receipt. Please make the subject somewhat descriptive and
meaningful
So, all that said, just drop Vinnie a line and he'll get back to you as soon as he has
the answer
Here are some of the recent questions Vinnie's
answered in the past couple of months:
To Nick, to whom we can't reply because
his ISP does not recognize his reply e-mail address. Nick asked if Les
Mis and Rent would still be playing on Broadway in
February and March of 2004
Les
Mis closed this past May after 6,680 performances. Rent,
which recorded its 3,000th performance July 11th, looks like it will
still be playing next Spring but all might depend on strong Fall and
holiday sales. Update: Tickets currently are available through May
30th. If it makes it through Spring the show might still be around
for the summer tourist season
Vivian from Poughkeepsie writes A group
of us are coming into town to see a Broadway matinee. Where's the
best place for us to park near the Shubert Theater
The Poughkeepsie train station
Similarly, Lenny from Hoboken I have to
come into the City for a meeting Downtown. Where can I park?
Try the Hoboken ferry dock
Steve from Down Under writes I am trying
to find out if any of the hostels listed in your index are able to
be pre-booked over the internet
Some hostels do take reservations over the
internet, whether by e-mail or an online form. We provide whatever
contact information we can find in our New
York City Hostel Guide. Keep in mind that during high-traffic
periods, such as the summer season, most hostels operate on a first
come, first served basis
A young lady from Italy writes Do you
think I will be problems if I go alone in NY for 3 weeks. I'm 20
female Italian. Are the NY people friendly?
I do not think you will have any problem in
New York City. The New York people are friendly and helpful. The
past few years has seen a great increase in tourism in New York and
there are many people on the streets day and night. Crime is down
and people are enjoying themselves. Of course, use common sense --
don't go someplace if you don't think you should. As when traveling
anywhere else, your common sense is your best friend. Have a great
time in New York City!
Everybody wants to know Where can I find
a cheap hotel?
I saw a decent place in Pennsylvania the
other day for $39 a night. If you mean a hotel in New York City you
must be prepared to pay much more. In downtown Philadelphia you can
get a nice room in a good chain, such as Sheraton, Doubletree,
Crowne Plaza, for around $100 per night or less. Comparable rooms in
NYC start at about $150. For less than $100 you might be able to
find something decent in an older property, maybe with a shared
bath. You might be able to find something at our Discount
New York City Hotels page -- be forewarned, rates quickly change
And a wise guy from Jersey cracks Yo,
Vinnie! Are you for real!
Only as real as Susie and Jim let me feel
