The New York Mets were born
through the efforts of attorney William Shea, for whom the stadium
is named. He sought a National League franchise for NYC as a
replacement for the Dodgers and Giants, from which the team's
colors come -- Dodger blue and Giant's orange. The Metsies' first
game was played in April, 1962. Since then they have provided New
York baseball fans with high drama, periods of frustration and
Citywide celebration. They've been tough contenders in recent
years and, with a revamping of the team before the 2002 season,
expected to contend in the 2003 season and beyond. Well, they've
done a bit more revamping and now hope the team they bring into
the 2004 season will be capable of contending in the big leagues
