The USTA has been trying to relegate
the "By the time you hear about it there aren't any tickets
left for the Open," to the urban myth category. And it looks
like it's been working. There now usually appears to be a
substantial number of halfway good seats available when tickets go
on sale to the public, unheard of just
a few years ago
Great Deals Want to see some
world-caliber tennis absolutely free? Players who haven't yet
made the cut get another chance during the US Open Qualifying
Tournament, August 22nd through August 25th (gates open 10:00A) and
admission is FREE! And the top players have to practice
somewhere and they get used to the courts Sunday -- along with all
the name pros you know -- August 27th
starting at 11:00A. Again, admission is FREE!
More Great Deals Families and kids get a great deal
during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, Saturday, August 26th. Take advantage
of FREE! grounds admission or modestly-priced seats and enjoy a wide variety of events and entertainment
Be a Ballperson If you want
to get up really close and really personal, and if you're 14-years
of age or older, try out to become an official ballperson! Tryouts
are Thursday, June 29th at 4:00P (registration begins at 3:00P), at the
National Tennis Center. As a prospective ballperson you'll be
evaluated on your running, throwing, and catching skills. Hey! And
get this, if you make the cut you'll be looking pretty snazzy in the Ralph Lauren-designed official ballperson's uniform.
Nifty. See the
Be a USTA Ballperson press release for all the fine details
Good News There are
always some cancellations of regular reserved seating for Arthur
Ashe Stadium. These are available at the box office or through
866-OPEN-TIX
Bad News The USTA used to
put
1,500 grounds passes on sale each day at 10:00A and if you got there
at a reasonable time you were almost assured of scoring a ducat. No
longer. Grounds passes are now sold in advance and some "may be
available" on the day of the matches. It's still worth a shot
so hop on the 7 train as early as you can. The grounds pass
entitles you to wander the National Tennis Center, taking in any
matches on the side courts and queuing for available seats at the
Louis Armstrong and Grandstand stadiums
Times Day
sessions 11:00A to 4:00P, gates open at 10:00A | Nite
sessions 7:00P to 11:00P, gates open 30 minutes after
conclusion of the last day match on Stadium court
Food Racquets
restaurant overlooks the Grandstand courts and is open to the
public. Expect long waits | The Outdoor Food Court has
about 20 stands and seating for 1,500. Expect long lines and high
prices
Security Virtually nothing is
allowed to be carried into the site, including any type of
container, briefcase, knapsack, cooler, radio, television, computer,
video camera, etc. No package check is available so leave anything
in doubt at home
Grab a grounds pass and wonder the
National Tennis Center in search of that memorable match that might
not make it to the television screen. There's a lot of excitement on
the side courts, and you can be there to see it. Or play 'leapfrog'
and hop from the Grandstand to Louis Armstrong Stadium. (Leapfrog is
best played with 3 teams of people. Team 1 heads off to the
Grandstand, Team 2 to Armstrong and Team 3 has a leisurely cup of
coffee. After a decent interval Team 3 heads to the Grandstand to
assume the seats Team 1 is vacating to assume the seats Team 2 is in
at Armstrong. Team 2 now has a leisurely cuppa' before heading over
to assume the now Team 3's seats at the Grandstand. You get the
idea.) There's plenty of action and the more you move around the
more you see
