This production isn't the Cabaret that was a hit in 1967. Nor is it the Cabaret of Liza Minnelli's 1972 starring film role. Nor the 1980s revival that pushed Joel Grey into an expanded headliner role. This Cabaret is darker, more sinister, as made apparent by the emcee's S&M-styled costume. The story, set in a decadent club in a decadent 1930s Berlin, involves an American writer who is drawn to the people of the Kit Kat Club, especially its one-time star Sally Bowles. The emcee acts as an observer, a commentator on the changing times and the stresses put on people and relationships. This revival has shown surprisingly strong legs, drawing large audiences for the better part of four years. Maybe it's the songs, from the first enticing Wilkommen the show includes a wistful Maybe This Time, a hopeful and strong Tomorrow Belongs to Me and, of course, the ever-popular Cabaret

Notes  The original production of Cabaret opened November 20, 1966, at the Broadhurst Theater. Jill Haworth and Joel Grey starred, along with Jack Gilford, Lotte Lenya, Bert Convy and Peg Murray
