Creative Andrew
Lloyd Weber & Tim Rice music & lyrics | Anthony Van
Laast choreography | Gale Edwards director
Cast Glenn Carter
Review If you can't hum
the music and lyrics from the first time around more than 30 years
ago, this is the show that skyrocketed Weber and Rice to fame. The
show, with its anti-establishment view of Christ's betrayal,
suffering and crucifixion, opened against a New York City backdrop
of anti-war demonstrations and almost daily bombings (the later film
to be set against scenes from the 1973 Arab-Israeli war). Poignant
scenes, dialogue and song ("I Don't Know How To Love Him")
became spiritual touchstones in young New Yorkers' lives
The new show lacks the of-the-moment
feel of the original production. Melodies and themes that were new
in the 70s have been recycled in so many Andrew Lloyd Weber shows
since that we now become bored, Or have we become jaded? Glen
Carter's JC is grittier, as are all the apostles and other
hangers-on, and as is the production. Leaner and meaner the show is
strictly commercial; none of the rebellious quality of the original
remains
Notes The original production
of Jesus Christ Superstar opened October 12, 1971, at the
Mark Hellenger Theater, now, fittingly, the Times Square Church. The
production starred Jeff Fenholt and Ben Vereen
