Review Liza's back on
the boards, playing the Palace with songs from her father Vincente's
films. If she can make it in New York . . . well, once upon a time
Liza had made it in New York and that's what makes this show a
success. People showing up at the Palace Theater are there because
they remember Liza's past stage successes; many followed her career
from her first appearance on the Jack Parr show (with a broken leg,
under the name of Elaine Gonadonga or something) in the early 60s
People who have followed Ms
Minnelli's tribulations of the past couple of decades will still be
surprised at her appearance. Instead of doing everything humanly
possible to get into shape for her couple of months on Broadway, Ms
Minnelli has apparently accepted one of her demons, she is not the
slim athletic dancer she once was. Her voice also shows signs of the
passing years; noted for belting out a tune a la her mother, Judy
Garland, Ms Minnelli's voice has not gracefully aged into a bourbon-
and tobacco-cured instrument. Still, the audience remembers
The show has been conceived as a
retrospective tribute to Ms Minnelli's father, Vincente, director of
films such as The Band Wagon, Kismet, Gigi and That's Entertainment.
Tunes from the films are interspersed with movie clips and family
photos. There is nothing particularly exciting and Ms Minnelli's
voice strains from time to time. The six male dancers and their
routines are largely superfluous, you keep waiting for the old Liza
to enter stage right and show them how it's done
If you loved Liza in the 60s and 70s
and watched her struggles in the 80s and 90s you probably won't be
disappointed with her current comeback. A bit saddened maybe, but
not disappointed
Bottom Line After all, it is
Liza!
