Geraldine Page, Katherine Hepburn,
Darren McGavin, Burt Lancaster. None of the fine actors who
originated the stage and film roles are on the boards at the Brooks
Atkinson Theater for this revival of The Rainmaker. But two fine
young actors are. Jayne Atkinson and Woody Harrelson make the roles
of Lizzie Curry and Bill Starbuck theirs, at least for this
generation. Ms Atkinson especially translates her character into a
more knowing, self-assured young woman, making Lizzie's realization
of her need for a Starbuck fix much more believable
Mr Harrelson's rendition of Midwest
con-man Bill Starbuck is all audiences want to see and expect. After
getting his feet wet with this foray, maybe he'll take on something
that demands more of his talent and range the next time around
The Rainmaker has been performed by
most high school and community theater groups not because it has the
intensity demanded by a Death of a Salesman, but especially because
it does not. The show was a lightweight -- and written that way by N
Richard Nash -- the first time around. It's still light, but plenty
enjoyable
