Creative Sam Shepard author | Michael Warchus director

Cast Josh Brolin | Elias Koteas

Original Cast Philip Seymour Hoffman | John C Riley

Review  The new West as well as the old turn out to be nothing but illusion in this revival of Sam Shepard's modern morality play. Shepard, at his gritty best, compares and contrast the reality of two brothers, one a nerdy screenwriter, one on the other side of the law, by putting them in a situation where they must come to terms with each other, with themselves, with family

Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C Riley alternate playing the lead characters, Austin, the screenwriter and Lee, the crook [June replacements Mr Brolin & Mr Koteas will alternate roles after a brief breaking in period]. This gambit was conceived by director Michael Warchus and brings vibrant, exciting theater to Broadway. Mr Warchus has given the young actors, prior to this performance seemingly cut from the same cloth, the freedom to interpret and improvise. The portrayals are different, the portrayals are dazzling. There is no hint of competition between Mr Hoffman and Mr Riley, just the collaboration between two gifted actors as they interpret the characters within their unique talents and strengths

Bottom Line See it. See it once, see it twice. See it
