Synopsis Private Lives is one of the most endearing and enduring of Noel Coward's comedies. Coward's premise is simple: It's Deauville, France in the 1930s. Two couples are on their honeymoons and coincidentally, as they find out when they run into each other on the terrace, two of the newlyweds had been divorced from each other. What are they to do? What else? Run off together while the newly deserted spouses give merry chase

Notes The original production of Noel Coward's Private Lives hit the Boards at the Times Square Theater in 1931. Noel Coward, Gertrude Lawrence, Laurence Olivier, Jill Esmond and Therese Quadri starred. The 1948 revival at the Plymouth Theater featured Tallulah Bankhead, Donald Cook and, again, Therese Quadri reprising her role as Lousie. Tammy Grimes took a turn as Amanda in 1969, as did Maggie Smith in 1975. The most talked about revival was at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton headed the cast. Then, in 1992, it was back to the Broadhurst Theater with Joan Collins along for the ride for 37 performances
