Synopsis We really don't care
what the show is about as long as Bernadette Peters is on the boards
as Mama Rose. Her voice might not be as big as Merman's but she's
the only diva who can take on the role. Now, the show: An
overbearing vaudeville stage mom lives her life through one talented
but rebellious daughter. After the budding young star leaves the act
it's up to not as pretty, not as talented sister Louise to pick up
the slack in her mom's quest for fame. Long emotionally -- and
financially -- supported by agent-cum-candy butcher Herbie Sommers,
Mama Rose pushes Louise to 'take it off' but finds herself outcast
when her fan-dancing daughter turns away from her and does not allow
her mother a share in her success
Broadway Show History The original musical
production of Gypsy bowed at the Broadway Theater May, 1959,
starring Ethel Merman as Rose, Jack Klugman as Herbie and Sandra
Church as Louise. The show ran for 702 performances, closing at the
Imperial Theater in March, 1961. The production garnered eight
1960 Tony® nominations
but all went home empty handed Gypsy has had two Broadway
revivals prior to this staging. The first opened September 23, 1974 at the Winter
Garden Theater with Angela Lansbury, Rex Robbins and Zan
Charisse on the boards. Ms Lansbury took home the
1975 outstanding actress Tony®;
Zan Charisse was nominated as featured actress and Arthur Laurents
for his direction Tyne Daly starred in a 1 1/2 year run that started at the St
James Theater in November 1989. Crista
Moore played Louise with Jonathan Hadary as Herbie and Tracy Venner
as June. The show won the
1990 Tony Award® as outstanding revival and Ms Daly won as
outstanding actress
Gypsy's fourth revival
was in March 2008, again at the St James Theater, with Patti Lupone,
Laura Benanti, Boyd Gaines and Leigh Ann Larkin In the Movies The 1962 movie version, starring Roz
Russell, Karl Malden and Natalie Wood, includes writing credits for
Arthur Laurents and Leonard Spigelgass based on Gypsy Rose Lee's
autobiography Gypsy, A Memoir, and music credits for Jule
Styne and Frank Perkins On Television
A Golden Globe winning performance was given by Bette Midler in her
portrayal of Mama Rose in the 1993 made-for-television version of
Gypsy. Directed by Emile Ardolino the cast included Peter
Riegert as Herbie, Cynthia Gibb as Louise and Jennifer Rae Beck as
June Tony Award®, Tony®, the Tony Award® logo, and
