Synopsis  William Shakespeare's King Lear chronicles the tragic crumbling of a royal family and the parallel destruction of a kingdom through the wants of human nature

Notes  King Lear has played almost innumerable times in major New York theaters. The first run in what is now considered to be a Broadway theater was in 1907 in repertory at 42nd Street's Lyric Theater, with a competing production in repertory at the New Amsterdam Theater. Some folks who have played Lear over the years include Robert B Mantell (1907, '09, '11, '15, '17, '18), Reginald Pole ('23), Fritz Leiber ('30), Donald Wolfit ('47), Louis Calhern ('50) and, in the last revival, Lee J Cobb in 1968. (Jim sadly remembers this last one, with Mr Cobb chewing the scenery, continually being upstaged and addressing his speeches to the back wall of the Vivian Beaumont stage.)
