It seems that every time a theater
goes dark Jackie Mason snatches it up for a run of some sort. We're
pleasantly surprised that this time it isn't for one of his one-man
stand-up acts (after all, if you caught him on Johnny Carson 30
years ago you know his act inside and out). But we're more than
surprised that this time Jackie does the song and dance bit in a
full-fledged musical comedy! If Mason's usual stand-up always seems
familiar, the premise of Laughing Room Only seems eerily so
-- wasn't it just a couple of years ago that The
Producers took Broadway by storm with a putting-on-a-show
within-a-show concept. Almost the same here, except Mason wants to
stage a $10 million show for a mere $19.99 (Earl Scheib where are
you?). To give Mason credit, for his first true White Way headliner
role he surrounds himself with a very solid group of young
performers, all of whom have been involved in Big Stem hits of the
past few years |
