Synopsis The Glass
Menagerie is Tennessee Williams' somewhat autobiographical
memory play dealing with the need to escape a stifling existence.
Set in St Louis, the play examines the narrator's, Tom, efforts to
leave behind his memory besotted mother Amanda, and his painfully
shy, very delicate sister Laura
Notes The Glass
Menagerie was to open March 15th. On February 21st, the
producers announced that Dallas Roberts, slated to play Tom, was
being replaced by Christian Slater. The opening was pushed back a
week to give Mr Slater a bit of time to prepare
The show premiered at the now gone Playhouse Theater in March
1945. Starring Laurette Taylor, Julie Haydon, Eddie Dowling and
Anthony Ross, and directed by Mr Dowling, the show had an impressive
563-performance run, closing at the Royale
Theater in August 1946
The Glass Menagerie has been
revived four times on Broadway (and countless other times around the
country and the world): 1965 at the Brooks Atkinson Theater with
Maureen Stapleton, Piper Laurie, George Grizzard and Pat Hingle; at
the Circle in the Square Theater in 1975 with, again, Maureen
Stapleton, Pamela Payton-Wright, Rip Torn and Paul Rudd; 1983 at the
Eugene O'Neill Theater in a production that featured Jessica Tandy,
Amanda Plummer, Bruce Davison and John Heard; and most recently, the
Roundabout Theatre's 1994 revival with Julie Harris, Calista
Flockhart, Zeljko Ivanek and Kevin Kilner
