A previously closed-to-the-rest-of-the-world Japan reacts to new influences -- American, British, French -- after the first visits by people from the west in 1853

Notes Pacific Overtures premiered in January 1976 at the Winter Garden Theater. It's not very long run (for a Sondheim hit), was directed by Hal Prince. The show received ten Tony Award® nominations, including best musical, best book, best score, best actor and featured actor, best choreography, best lighting and best direction, but won only two: best scenic and best costume design
