Notes The Rivals has an
ancient performance history in New York City; according the the Internet
Broadway Database the comedy was first staged at the John Street
Theater in 1778 and has had seven documented Broadway
"revivals," beginning in 1861 at Wallack's Theater. Modern
revivals (post 1900), have been staged in 1910 at the Garden
Theater, 1912 at the 39th Street Theater, 1922 at the Empire, 1923
at the 48th Street and 1930 at Erlanger's
Theater. The most recent revival was a 54-performance run
directed by Eva Le Gallienne at the Shubert
Theater. Mary Boland starred as Mrs Malaprop, with Donald Burr
appearing as Captain Jack Absolute
